Advanzia Mastercard Gold: paying in full instead of Teilzahlung
On the fee-free Mastercard Gold from Advanzia Bank, the amount you pay each month decides whether the bill is settled or carries on as an interest-bearing Teilzahlung.
By Deniz Erginos. Updated
Advanzia Bank S.A. in Luxembourg sells its Mastercard Gold in Germany as a fee-free credit card through gebührenfrei.de. It is a revolving credit card, and the terms make German law apply. A bill arrives by email every month, and you repay all of it or part of it as a Teilzahlung (part payment), but at least the Mindestbetrag (minimum). Under clause 5 of the terms, normal use costs no fees, only interest. The contract documents are in German only, so the German terms appear next to the English ones.

How Teilzahlung works on the Advanzia card
Part payment is not an add-on on this card, it is built into the card agreement itself. Which way a month goes is decided by the amount that reaches Advanzia by the due date on the bill. The terms set that date as the 20th of the month, or the next bank business day in Frankfurt am Main if the 20th is not one.
- Gesamtrechnungsbetrag, the full bill
- The whole amount on the monthly bill. If it arrives by the due date, Advanzia waives the credit interest, except on cash transactions.
- Mindestbetrag, the minimum
- A percentage of the full bill, with a fixed euro amount as a floor. Both are set out in clause 4 of the terms.
- Teilzahlung, part payment
- Anything between the minimum and the full bill. The rest stays on the card as a balance and carries interest until it is repaid.
- Barverfügungen, cash transactions
- Cash from a machine or a counter, transfers and money transfers out of the card account, and purchases of cryptocurrency. They carry interest from the transaction date even when you pay the bill in full.

Clause 3 covers the choice between full and part payment, clause 4 (“Krediteinräumung, Zins”) the minimum, the due date, interest from the transaction date and the waiver for full payment, clause 5 fees, clause 14 the governing law.
What Teilzahlung costs: interest from the transaction date
Under clause 4, card spending carries interest from the transaction date, which for a purchase is the day you buy, calculated by the day and charged monthly. On a bill you pay in full, Advanzia does not claim that interest. Pay less and the waiver falls away for that bill: the purchases carry interest from their transaction dates, not from the due date. Your payment lowers the interest-bearing amount only from the day it reaches Advanzia.
The borrowing rate (Sollzins) and the annual percentage rate (effektiver Jahreszins) are in the price list, the Preis- und Leistungsverzeichnis. It shows purchases on a bill paid in full by the due date as interest-free, and one and the same rate for purchases on part payment and for cash transactions. The pre-contract information adds a worked example.

Paying the full bill instead
To pay no interest on purchases, the Gesamtrechnungsbetrag has to reach Advanzia by the due date. This is how:
- Take the Gesamtrechnungsbetrag from the monthly bill, not the Mindestbetrag.
- Transfer it from an account in your own name at a bank in the EU or the EFTA. The terms do not allow payments from other accounts or by cheque.
- Send the transfer a few days before the due date. Under German law (§ 675s BGB) a euro transfer may take until the end of the business day after your order, and one on paper a business day longer.
- Check the next bill for interest on purchases. If there is any, ask Advanzia when your payment arrived.
Besides bank transfer, the terms name SEPA direct debit (Lastschrift), but only where Advanzia offers it. They do not say whether it is offered for your card, or whether it collects the full bill or only the minimum. Ask customer service before you rely on it.

Where a payment above the minimum goes
You may repay the credit in full or in part at any time. Clause 4 of the terms and the pre-contract information both say so, and German law gives the same right for every consumer credit agreement in § 500 (2) BGB. Neither the terms nor the price list name a fee for it.
Every payment, the minimum included, is applied in a fixed order: first to any amount over the credit limit, then to interest already charged, then to cash transactions and last to purchases. An extra payment therefore covers interest first, and only the rest lowers the balance, from the day it arrives.

Clearing an Advanzia balance faster
The minimum is worked out as a share of the bill, so it shrinks with the balance, and the guide to revolving credit cards covers what that does to the timeline. On the Advanzia card three more steps follow from its terms.
- Pay a fixed amount above the minimum, the same every month. The payment then stops shrinking with the balance, and as long as it stays above the monthly interest the balance has an end date.
- Pay early in the month, for instance right after payday. The interest-bearing amount falls from the day the money arrives, so each day sooner saves interest.
- Rest the card for new purchases. While you are not paying the full bill the waiver does not apply, and every new purchase carries interest from its transaction date.
If not even the minimum arrives
- The unpaid minimum stays due and is added to the next month’s minimum.
- Default interest runs on the arrears at five percentage points above the base rate (§ 497 and § 288 BGB), plus a fee per reminder (Mahngebühr, section 3 of the pre-contract information).
- If Advanzia hands the claim to a collection agency, you bear the agency’s fees.
- Advanzia reserves the right to block the card for the time being while you are in arrears.
- Advanzia reports data on conduct that breaches the agreement to SCHUFA, and under its terms to CRIF and Experian as well.
- With the agreement you assigned the attachable part of your wages to Advanzia (clause 17, Lohnabtretung). As a rule Advanzia may only enforce it after a warning with a deadline, and with arrears of at least two consecutive payments and a minimum share of the credit limit. Until then Advanzia does not notify your employer.

The app
In the app the balance on your Advanzia card becomes a pad with one sheet per month, and on top sits the day it ends at your payment. Record an extra payment and it takes sheets off, and you see how many days sooner you are done. Everything stays on the phone, with no account and no bank connection.
Common questions
- How does Teilzahlung work on the Advanzia card?
- A bill arrives every month, and by the due date you pay at least the Mindestbetrag or the whole Gesamtrechnungsbetrag. Whatever you do not pay stays on the card as a balance and carries interest. Clause 4 of the terms sets the minimum and the due date.
- What interest does Advanzia charge on Teilzahlung?
- The borrowing rate and the APR are in the Preis- und Leistungsverzeichnis, and the pre-contract information adds a worked example. Interest runs by the day from the transaction date, so from the purchase, not from the due date.
- Is the fee-free Advanzia card still free if I pay in instalments?
- It costs no fee: clause 5 of the terms rules out fees for normal use, apart from interest. Part payment therefore costs interest on the outstanding amount from the transaction date.
- How do I stop paying the Advanzia Mastercard in instalments?
- Transfer the whole Gesamtrechnungsbetrag so that it reaches Advanzia by the due date on the bill. For every bill paid that way Advanzia waives the credit interest, except on cash, transfers and money transfers out of the card account and crypto purchases. If the money is not there yet, run the balance down first with a fixed payment above the minimum.
- Can I pay the Advanzia card by direct debit?
- The terms mention SEPA direct debit only where Advanzia offers it, and do not say which amount it collects. Ask customer service whether it is available for your card and whether it takes the full bill or only the minimum.
- Can I pay more than the minimum on the Advanzia card?
- Yes, at any time and in full or in part, under the terms and under § 500 (2) BGB. A payment goes first to any amount over the limit, then to interest, then to cash transactions and last to purchases.
- Why is there interest on my Advanzia bill when I paid in full?
- Two rules in clause 4 of the terms lead to it. Cash, transfers and money transfers out of the card account and crypto purchases carry interest from the transaction date even when the bill is paid in full. And if the Gesamtrechnungsbetrag arrived after the due date, the waiver does not apply to that bill.
- What happens if I cannot pay my Advanzia debt?
- Default interest, reminder fees and any collection agency fees come on top, Advanzia can block the card for the time being and reports conduct that breaches the agreement to SCHUFA. Under clause 17 it can, as a rule only after a warning with a deadline, enforce the wage assignment. Talk to a Schuldnerberatung early.
