Paying off PayPal Pay in 4 and Pay Monthly early

You can pay off a PayPal Pay Monthly loan or a Pay in 4 plan early at any time without a fee or penalty, and the day you send the payment decides whether autopay runs as well.

PayPal sells two pay later products in the United States, and they are different kinds of debt. Pay in 4 splits a purchase into four interest-free payments two weeks apart, the first one at checkout, and PayPal, Inc. is the lender. Pay Monthly is an instalment loan from WebBank over several months at a fixed APR, which can be zero on some offers. The APR of your loan is in the Truth in Lending disclosure and the loan agreement you were shown before you accepted it.

Paying early costs nothing

PayPal says for both products that you can make extra payments whenever you like or pay the loan off in full at any time, without a fee or penalty. On Pay Monthly that can lower the total interest you pay. On Pay in 4 there is no interest, so paying early only takes due dates off the calendar.

The same page sets out the autopay cutoff, where a surplus is applied and what happens to a missed payment.

Pay in 4 repayments, PayPal Help CenterPayPal states that there are no penalty fees for paying a Pay in 4 balance off early. The page also covers the autopay cutoff, the refund of an overpayment, missed repayments and refunds from the merchant.

Where an extra payment goes

Anything you pay above the amount due is applied to the outstanding loan balance. What decides the rest is timing. With autopay on, a one-time payment has to arrive before the end of the day before the due date, Eastern time, to stop that date’s automatic payment. Sent later, both payments can go through, and on Pay in 4 PayPal returns the overpayment to your PayPal balance.

Paying a plan down, step by step

  • Log in to PayPal and open Pay Later.
  • Choose the Pay Monthly loan or the Pay in 4 plan.
  • Select Make a Payment and enter an extra amount or the full balance.
  • With autopay on, send it before the end of the day before a due date if it should take that date’s place.
  • Check afterwards that the balance and the remaining payments have changed.

Which balance first

While nothing is past due, extra money goes to the debt with the highest APR, because that is where each dollar saves the most interest. A Pay in 4 plan comes last, since it carries none. Anything already past due comes first, because that is where fees and credit reports start.

Missed payments and refunds

  • On Pay Monthly a missed amount is added to the next monthly payment, and missed payments may be reported to the credit bureaus.
  • On Pay in 4 a missed payment makes the loan past due, and PayPal says it can affect whether you are offered pay later again.
  • PayPal charges no late fee on either product, but your bank may charge one when a payment is returned for insufficient funds.
  • On Pay in 4 a refund from the shop is applied to the outstanding balance once PayPal receives it. Until then the scheduled payments stay due, and a refund as store credit or a gift card does not reduce the loan.

What is Pay in 4, PayPal Help CenterPayPal states that it charges no sign-up, application, late or non-sufficient funds fees on Pay in 4, and that your own bank may still charge a fee when a repayment is returned.

When a counsellor is the better call

The app answers how long it takes. When the monthly payments together are more than what is left at the end of the month, a non-profit credit counsellor is the better call, because the question has become what your creditors will agree to.

Common questions

Can I pay off PayPal Pay Monthly early?
Yes, in part or in full at any time, without a fee or penalty. Open Pay Later in your PayPal account, choose the loan and select Make a Payment. PayPal says paying early can lower the total interest you pay.
Can I pay off Pay in 4 early?
Yes. Make an unscheduled payment for the remaining amount under Pay Later, and there is no penalty for it. Pay in 4 carries no interest, so paying early saves no money, it takes the remaining due dates away.
Why did autopay still take a payment after I paid early?
Because the one-time payment arrived after the cutoff. With autopay on, it has to arrive before the end of the day before the due date, Eastern time, to stop the automatic payment for that date. After the cutoff both can go through, and on Pay in 4 PayPal returns the overpayment to your PayPal balance.
Where does an extra payment on Pay Monthly go?
PayPal applies anything above the amount due to the outstanding loan balance. Open the loan in Pay Later once the payment has posted to see the new balance and the payments that remain.
Does PayPal charge late fees on Pay in 4 or Pay Monthly?
PayPal lists no late fees for either. A missed Pay Monthly amount is added to the next payment and may be reported to the credit bureaus, and a returned payment can still cost a fee at your own bank.
Do I keep paying Pay in 4 after returning the item?
Yes, until the refund reaches PayPal, which then applies it to the outstanding balance. A refund as store credit or a gift card does not reduce the loan, so the payments keep running.
Does paying PayPal off early work the same way in Germany?
The monthly plan there is PayPal Ratenzahlung, with PayPal as the lender, and early repayment is free as well. An extra payment is credited to the last instalments of the plan, though, and the next direct debit still runs on its date.
