Which loan you have decides the route
- Ratenkredit (BestCredit)
- A fixed borrowing rate and level monthly instalments. Openbank sends the payoff amount by letter on request.
- Autokredit (CarCredit)
- Car finance with or without a final balloon payment, the Schlussrate, with the vehicle as the bank’s security. Online banking shows the payoff amount directly.
- Zinia, now Openbank Pay
- Shop instalments, for example at Apple, from a different company in the Santander group. Paying early costs nothing extra.

Santander early repayment: your right and the cost
Openbank’s FAQ say you can repay a Ratenkredit or car finance early at any time, in part or in full. German law grants the same right for every consumer loan in § 500(2) BGB, so no special clause in your contract has to allow it. Under § 501 BGB the interest and costs for the part of the term that falls away are dropped.
In return Openbank charges compensation for early repayment, the Vorfälligkeitsentschädigung. The FAQ give it as usually 1 percent of the amount repaid early, and 0.5 percent when less than twelve months remain. Those are the ceilings in § 502(3) BGB, and the compensation may never exceed the interest you would have paid up to the agreed end.
Under § 502(2) BGB nothing is due if the repayment comes from an insurance policy the loan agreement required to secure it, or if the contract’s information on the term, your right to terminate or the calculation of the compensation is inadequate.

§ 501 BGB, Gesetze im InternetThe official German wording. Under paragraph 1 the total cost falls by the interest and costs for the remaining term when you repay early.

Getting the payoff amount, the Ablösebetrag
Before you transfer the rest, get the exact payoff amount, because it may include the compensation for early repayment.
- Log in to Openbank’s online banking or app. Without access, you register with your email address, a password and your loan or finance number.
- Select your loan under “Kredite” (loans) and tap “Ablöseangebot anfragen” (request a payoff offer).
- For a Ratenkredit the figure and transfer details come by letter. For car finance online banking shows the payoff amount and the account straight away.
- Transfer the amount, then check that the loan shows as settled.
FAQ Kredit, OpenbankIn German only. The questions on the payoff offer and on registering give the steps. The early repayment question covers the letter for a Ratenkredit, the on-screen figure for car finance and the fee for a written statement.
Preis- und Leistungsverzeichnis, OpenbankOpenbank’s price list dated 7 October 2026, in German. Section 8, “Sonstige Dienstleistungen”, on page 15 lists the fee for a payoff statement requested explicitly.
Extra payments on a Santander loan: cost and effect
An extra payment, a Sondertilgung, is money paid on top of the instalments. For a Ratenkredit the FAQ name up to 1 percent of the payment as compensation, for a car loan 1 percent, the ceiling in § 502(3) BGB. If no more than a year lies between your payment and the agreed repayment, the same paragraph allows at most 0.5 percent, which the car loan FAQ do not mention. Check which rate the statement applies.
For the car loan Openbank says extra payments can shorten the term. For the Ratenkredit the FAQ point to online banking for the details. Before you pay, ask through the message function in online banking whether the instalment stays and the term gets shorter, or the other way round. A shorter term saves more interest. A lower instalment gives you more room each month, but you pay interest for longer.

Autokredit, OpenbankIn German. “Kann ich Sondertilgungen leisten?” says extra payments are possible and can shorten the term.
Paying off a Santander car loan early: Fahrzeugbrief and balloon payment
With a car loan the vehicle is transferred to the bank as security until the last instalment. Openbank releases the Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II, the registration document known as the Fahrzeugbrief, only once the finance is fully repaid. You then request it under “Kredite” with “Zulassungsbescheinigung versenden” (send registration certificate). If you sell the car to clear the loan, agree the order of steps with the buyer, because there is no Fahrzeugbrief before the payoff.
With balloon finance Openbank sends a refinancing offer before the final payment is due. Above a size the car loan FAQ state, the final payment is not collected by direct debit and you transfer it yourself. Whether an extra payment lowers the instalments, the term or the final payment is not in the FAQ, so ask first.

Paying it off with a new loan
If you refinance with a cheaper loan, it has to cover the outstanding balance plus any compensation for early repayment. Openbank’s own refinancing page uses exactly that sum. Compare the annual percentage rates with the compensation counted in.

Paying Zinia off early, including at Apple
Zinia is now Openbank Pay, a brand of Open Bank, S.A. in Madrid, the Santander group’s digital bank. Terms, instalments, conditions and login stay the same, only the app has a new name. At Apple, on apple.com and in Apple Retail stores, you pay in instalments through Openbank Pay. The agreement is with the shop, the claim is assigned to Openbank Pay, and only a payment to Openbank Pay settles it.
Openbank Pay’s help says you can pay earlier at no extra cost, and the terms rule out an early repayment penalty. Since the plan costs nothing as long as you pay as instructed, paying early saves no money, it only removes due dates.
- Log in to the Openbank Pay app or website.
- Open the order and tap “Pay”. For online orders this works only once the shop has shipped.
- If you pay by bank transfer, put the payment reference in the description field and transfer the total amount, or the transfer is rejected.
Zinia is now Openbank Pay, Openbank PayUnder “What changes for you? Nothing!” the repayment terms, instalments, conditions and login stay the same. The page names Open Bank, S.A. as the owner of the brand.

Can I pay before the due date?, Openbank Pay HelpThe answer says you can pay earlier at no extra cost and describes “Pay”, the wait until shipping and what to put in a bank transfer.
When an instalment will not clear
On an Openbank loan a deferral or suspension carries a charge and is checked case by case, so the application is not yet an approval. You apply for it, or for a lower instalment, in online banking under “Ratenplan ändern” (change repayment plan). If only the debit date clashes with your payday, move it under “Zahlungstermin ändern” (change payment date). Openbank Pay cannot postpone a due date at the moment.
FAQ Kredit, OpenbankIn German only. “Ich kann meine Raten derzeit nicht zahlen. Was kann ich tun?” covers the deferral and “Ratenplan ändern”, and “Kann ich meinen Zahlungstermin ändern?” the debit date.
Can I postpone the final payment due date?, Openbank Pay HelpThe answer says this option is currently not available.
Which debt first
Extra money goes first to the debt with the highest annual percentage rate, counting the compensation for early repayment as a cost on the Santander loan. An Openbank Pay plan that costs nothing on schedule comes last. Only something already overdue jumps the queue, because that is where fees start.
When a counselling service is the better call
The app answers how long it takes. When the instalments together are more than what is left at the end of the month, a debt counselling service, a Schuldnerberatung, is the better call. It can negotiate with your creditors, free of charge and bound by confidentiality.
Find a counselling centre, BAG-SBThe German federal association for debt counselling runs the directory of recognised centres, in German. Advice there is free of charge.
Online debt counselling, CaritasFree and anonymous, in German, without visiting an office. The answer comes in writing from a counsellor.
The app
In the app the loan becomes a pad with one sheet per month, and on top sits the day it ends. Record an extra payment and it takes sheets off, and you see how many days sooner you are done. Everything stays on the phone, with no account and no bank connection.
