Paying off an OTTO Ratenzahlung early
You can pay an OTTO instalment plan off early, in part or in full, and OTTO Payments then sends you a new Ratenplan that shows what has changed.
By Deniz Erginos. Updated
On otto.de you can choose Ratenzahlung, monthly instalments, at checkout, or convert an open invoice into instalments afterwards. Both cost a surcharge, which the payment terms call interest, at a fixed borrowing rate. Your own figures are in the Ratenplan, the instalment schedule you receive after the purchase. Every OTTO page and term cited here is in German.
Who you actually owe
- The seller
- You agree the purchase and the instalments with the seller: Otto GmbH & Co. KGaA for OTTO’s own items, otherwise a retailer on the marketplace. The goods remain the seller’s property until they are paid in full.
- OTTO Payments GmbH
- OTTO’s payment service provider, a payment institution supervised by BaFin, the German financial regulator. The seller assigns its claim to OTTO Payments, so every instalment goes there. Converting an invoice into instalments later is a paid deferral agreed with OTTO Payments directly.
- Hanseatic Bank
- It collects the direct debits. It is not a party to the instalment agreement.

Paying early under German law
An instalment purchase with a surcharge is a Teilzahlungsgeschäft, an instalment sale, and a later conversion is a paid deferral of payment. § 506 of the German Civil Code (BGB) applies the consumer credit rules to both, so § 500(2) BGB lets you settle early, in part or in full, at any time, even if the contract says nothing about extra payments.
German law has a floor here. § 491(2) BGB excludes, among others, credit below 200 euros, and for an instalment sale § 506(4) BGB uses the cash price for that test. If yours is below it, neither the right to pay early nor the interest rules below come from the statute. OTTO Payments’ FAQ does not distinguish by amount when it describes an extra payment, though.
§ 506 BGB, Gesetze im InternetThe official German wording on deferred payment and financial accommodation. Paragraph 1 applies §§ 491a to 502, paragraph 3 names instalment sales, and paragraph 4 puts the cash price in place of the net loan amount.
§ 491 BGB, Gesetze im InternetThe official German wording on consumer loan agreements. Paragraph 2 sentence 2 number 1 excludes agreements with a net loan amount below 200 euros.
§ 500 BGB, Gesetze im InternetThe official German wording on early repayment. Paragraph 2 sentence 1 carries the right to settle early, in part or in full, at any time, and paragraph 1 the right to terminate without notice where no repayment date is fixed.
What happens to the interest when you pay early
OTTO states its cost as a monthly surcharge, a rate per month on the purchase price times the number of instalments. In the sample schedule in the payment terms every instalment is split into repayment and interest, and the interest share falls from one instalment to the next as the balance goes down.
Under § 501(1) BGB, paying early reduces the total cost of the credit by the interest and costs of the remaining term. Pay everything off and you do not owe the surcharge for the months after that. The new Ratenplan shows the exact effect.
The payment terms mention no compensation for early repayment. Because the borrowing rate is fixed, § 502 BGB would allow one. Paragraph 3 caps it, for instalment sales too through § 506 BGB, at 1 percent of the amount repaid early, at 0.5 percent when no more than a year is left, and always at the interest until the agreed end.

§ 501 BGB, Gesetze im InternetThe official German wording on cost reduction. Under paragraph 1 the total cost falls by the interest and costs of the remaining term when you settle early.
§ 502 BGB, Gesetze im InternetThe official German wording on compensation for early repayment. Paragraph 1 ties it to a fixed borrowing rate, and paragraph 3 holds the ceilings.
How to pay part or all of it off
- Open Mein Konto, your account on otto.de or in the OTTO app, and go to the invoices (Rechnungen). The payment details are there.
- To clear the plan, ask OTTO Payments through Hilfe & Kontakt for the amount that settles it on a given day. For an extra payment you choose the amount yourself.
- Transfer to OTTO Payments with the payment reference (Verwendungszweck) from the invoice or from OTTO Payments’ email. The invoice in the app and on otto.de also carries a QR code for this.
- Do not pay OTTO or the seller directly. OTTO Payments has no access to their accounts, and the money first has to be sent back to you.
- After a few working days the payment shows in Mein Konto. Once the invoice is settled, OTTO Payments confirms it by email.
What happens after an extra payment
OTTO Payments’ FAQ says that after an extra payment, a Sondertilgung, you automatically receive a new Ratenplan by email, and it is in Mein Konto as well. Whether it lowers the instalment or shortens the term, the payment terms only settle for returns: there the instalment drops and the term stays the same.
So check the number and the size of the instalments in the new plan. A shorter term saves more interest, a smaller instalment leaves more room each month, and if you would rather finish sooner, ask OTTO Payments. Under § 492(3) BGB you can ask for a repayment schedule at any time.

When an instalment is missed
If you do not pay an instalment by the due date in the Ratenplan, the payment terms put you in default without a separate reminder. From then on the following applies.
- OTTO Payments reserves a flat charge for each reminder, set out in section 1.4 of the payment terms.
- Default interest runs on the overdue amount, five percentage points above the base rate under § 288(1) BGB.
- The whole balance can only be demanded, or the purchase withdrawn from, once you are behind on at least two instalments in a row that together make up at least 10 percent of the total amount, or 5 percent on terms over three years, and a two-week deadline set with that warning has passed (§§ 498 and 508 BGB). Below the 200 euro floor this protection does not apply.

§ 508 BGB, Gesetze im InternetThe official German wording on withdrawal from instalment sales. It refers to the conditions of § 498 and puts the total amount in place of the nominal amount.
OTTO instalments and SCHUFA
Before granting Ratenzahlung, OTTO Payments may check with the German credit bureaus SCHUFA, Experian (infoscore) and CRIF and use the Otto Group’s internal credit database, which it runs itself. Its privacy notice says single checks do not change your score in the vast majority of cases, while frequent use of invoice, instalment or direct debit payment can lower it in individual cases.
What gets reported is an unpaid claim, and only after several unsuccessful reminders and after a reminder has told you a report is possible. The notice does not describe reporting an instalment purchase that is being paid on time. Once an unpaid claim is settled, the internal database stops using it.

Which debt first
If an overdraft, a credit card or another instalment plan runs alongside, extra money goes first to the debt with the highest annual percentage rate, because that is where each euro saves the most interest. The rate for OTTO is in the Ratenplan. Only something already overdue comes first, because reminder charges are added there.
When a counselling service is the better call
The app answers how long it takes. When the instalments together are more than what is left at the end of the month, a debt counselling service can help. In Germany it can negotiate with your creditors, free of charge and bound by confidentiality.

The app
In the app an OTTO instalment plan becomes a pad with one sheet per month, and on top sits the day it ends. Record an extra payment and it takes sheets off, and you see how many days sooner you are done. Everything stays on the phone, with no account and no bank connection.
Common questions
- Can I pay off an OTTO Ratenzahlung early?
- Yes, in part or in full. Transfer the money to OTTO Payments with the payment reference from your invoice, and OTTO Payments then sends you a new Ratenplan. In German law the right sits in § 500(2) BGB and reaches instalment sales through § 506 BGB, though § 491 BGB excludes credit below 200 euros.
- How do I settle an OTTO instalment plan in full?
- Ask OTTO Payments through Hilfe & Kontakt for the amount that settles your plan on a given day. Transfer it to OTTO Payments with the payment reference from the invoice or through the QR code in it. Once the invoice is settled, OTTO Payments confirms it by email.
- Do I save interest by paying OTTO instalments early?
- Yes, if your purchase falls under consumer credit law: § 501 BGB cuts the total cost by the interest and costs of the term that drops away. OTTO Payments’ own terms call the surcharge interest. How much less you pay is in the new Ratenplan.
- Is there a fee for ending an OTTO instalment plan early?
- OTTO Payments’ terms mention no compensation for early repayment, and § 502 BGB would cap one at 1 percent of the amount repaid early, or 0.5 percent with a year or less remaining. § 500(1) BGB only allows terminating without notice where no repayment date is fixed. So you end an instalment purchase by paying the rest.
- Does an extra payment lower the instalment or shorten the plan?
- The new Ratenplan that OTTO Payments sends after a Sondertilgung shows which. The payment terms only fix it for returns, where the instalment drops and the term stays. If you want to finish sooner, ask for a shorter term.
- Who is the lender behind OTTO Ratenzahlung?
- You agree the instalment purchase with the seller, which for OTTO’s own items is Otto GmbH & Co. KGaA. The seller assigns the claim to OTTO Payments GmbH, and every instalment goes there. If you convert an invoice later, OTTO Payments itself is your contract partner, and Hanseatic Bank only collects the direct debits.
- Does an OTTO instalment purchase show up at SCHUFA?
- OTTO Payments may check with SCHUFA, Experian and CRIF before granting instalments, and its privacy notice says a single check does not change your score in the vast majority of cases. Unpaid claims are reported after several unsuccessful reminders, and a reminder warns you first. The notice does not describe reporting an instalment purchase that is paid on time.
- What happens to the instalments when I return something?
- The total falls and you receive an adjusted Ratenplan. Under the payment terms the monthly instalment gets smaller while the term stays the same. If you would still rather finish sooner, pay the freed-up amount as an extra payment.
