Barclays credit card in Germany: switching off Teilzahlung and paying in full

You switch off Teilzahlung on a Barclays card yourself, in the easybank app or in online banking, by choosing the whole balance instead of a percentage under “Nächste Rückzahlung”.

By Deniz Erginos. Updated

If you hold a Barclays credit card in Germany, the bank behind it is now easybank. BAWAG Group of Vienna bought Barclays’ German consumer business at the start of 2025, it has traded as easybank since February 2026, and your contract is with BAWAG AG Niederlassung Deutschland in Hamburg. Barclays only allows the use of its name and holds no stake in the business. Teilzahlung, the German term for revolving repayment, works as before: from the day the account opens a minimum repayment is set, that share of the balance is collected by direct debit every month, and the rest carries interest.

Who issues your Barclays card now

How to turn off Teilzahlung and pay in full

Teilzahlung cannot be removed from the card, because the credit line is part of the card agreement. What you change is the repayment: instead of a percentage you choose full repayment, which the app offers as “100 %”. easybank then collects the whole balance on the due date from your Referenzkonto, the current account you registered.

  • Open the easybank Deutschland app or online banking. Your Barclays login still works.
  • Go to “Nächste Rückzahlung” or “Letzte Rückzahlung”. In online banking, easybank calls the area “Rückzahlung”.
  • Under “Grundeinstellung”, set the percentage to “100 %”.
  • Check the amount and date of the debit on your next statement, and make sure your current account covers it.

The first debit after the switch takes the whole balance, including what built up during the months on Teilzahlung. If your current account cannot take that in one go, raise the percentage first and switch to “100 %” once the old balance is gone.

To avoid the fee, leave the setting on a percentage and pay the rest yourself each month, as a “Wunschbetrag” by instant debit or by transfer. Under section 8.2 of the terms, a transfer received during the month counts towards the amount due, and the direct debit shrinks accordingly. The month only stays interest-free if the whole balance is booked to the card account by the due date. Otherwise each transaction carries interest from the day it was booked.

Rückzahlungstipps, easybankeasybank’s repayment tips, in German. The three numbered steps name “Nächste Rückzahlung”, “Grundeinstellung” and “Wunschbetrag”; above them the page says a higher repayment shortens the time and saves interest and that extra payments of any amount are possible at any time.

What Teilzahlung costs in interest

On Teilzahlung you are drawing on the credit line. easybank charges interest from the day each transaction is booked until the balance is paid off in full, and cash withdrawals can carry a higher rate than purchases. The rate is variable: section 8.3 of the terms ties it to the European Central Bank’s main refinancing rate, up or down. There is no separate fee for Teilzahlung; the cost is the interest. Your rate and the month’s interest cost are on your monthly statement.

If you pay the full statement amount on time, section 8.2 waives the interest on charges that arose in the last billing month. A balance carried over from earlier months is not covered and carries interest until it is paid. The statement after the switch can therefore still show interest for the time the old balance was open.

Allgemeine Geschäftsbedingungen easybank Kreditkarte, easybankThe card terms, version April 2026, in German. Section 8.1 sets interest from the first day of use, 8.2 the payment period, minimum, interest waiver and how transfers count, 8.3 the rate adjustment, 8.5 the Zahlplan, 8.6 the order of allocation, 8.7 default.

Paying the balance down faster

  • Raise the percentage under “Grundeinstellung”. The repayment grows with it, the balance is gone sooner, and you pay less interest. You can change it at any time, free of charge.
  • Have a “Wunschbetrag” collected. You pick the amount, and easybank takes it once as an instant debit. In online banking that is free under the price list.
  • Transfer from your current account to the card account. The IBAN is on your statement.

A transfer during the month replaces part of the next direct debit rather than adding to it. You only finish sooner if over the months you pay more in total than the set repayment, so it works best together with a higher percentage. The terms do not say how an instant debit changes the next direct debit, so check under “Nächste Rückzahlung” afterwards what is still due.

Section 8.6 sets where a payment goes: first to amounts in default, then to current Zahlplan instalments, then to cash withdrawals, then to purchases and transfers with the highest rate, and last to fees and interest. An extra payment therefore hits the most expensive items first.

Fixed instalments with a Zahlplan

If you want an end date instead of a percentage, easybank offers the Zahlplan: single transactions or a whole monthly statement become monthly instalments over a term you choose, at a reduced rate. The account must not be in default, and online banking and your statement show which transactions qualify. Extra payments do not shorten it, because under section 8.5 a credit repays only the monthly instalment. You can dissolve it free of charge at any time and pay the rest in full.

Zahlplan, easybank FAQeasybank’s Zahlplan FAQ, in German. “Welche Voraussetzungen gelten für einen easybank Zahlplan?” names the no-default condition and where qualifying transactions show, and “Sind Sondertilgungen für easybank Zahlpläne möglich?” says no and names the free dissolution.

Which debt first

If an overdraft, a loan or a Klarna plan runs alongside the card, extra money goes first to the debt with the highest rate. easybank itself says a credit line used up over a long time can get expensive and that an instalment loan carries lower interest, and offers to check alternatives by phone. Only what is already overdue comes first.

Kreditrahmen festlegen, easybankeasybank’s help page on the credit limit, in German. “Du möchtest deinen Kreditrahmen senken?” gives the route through “Chat & Anruf” and says a lowering is permanent.

Kreditkarten-Konto kündigen, easybank FAQeasybank’s FAQ on closing the account, in German. The answer on using the card after termination says an open balance falls due on the termination date.

If a repayment cannot be collected

  • If you are wholly or partly in default with two consecutive instalments, easybank may terminate and demand the whole balance under section 8.7.
  • Under section 8.6 payments go to the arrears first.
  • easybank dissolves running Zahlpläne when too little comes in two months in a row, and the lower rate ends (section 8.5).

If a month gets tight, a lower percentage before the debit is better than a direct debit that bounces. The floor is the minimum repayment.

When a counselling service is the better call

The app answers how long it takes. When the repayments together are more than what is left at the end of the month, a Schuldnerberatung, a recognised debt counselling service, is the better call. It can negotiate with your creditors, free of charge and bound by confidentiality.

Find a counselling centre, BAG-SBThe German federal association for debt counselling runs the directory of recognised centres. Advice there is free of charge.

Online-Schuldnerberatung, CaritasFree and anonymous debt counselling online, in German, without going to an office. The answers come in writing from counsellors.

The app

Enter a fixed monthly payment and the app turns your card balance into a pad with one sheet per month, with the day it reaches zero on top. If the payment does not cover the interest, the app says so in one sentence instead of inventing a date. Every extra payment takes sheets off. Everything stays on the phone, with no account and no bank connection.

Common questions

How do I turn off Teilzahlung on my Barclays Visa?
Open the easybank Deutschland app or online banking, go to “Nächste Rückzahlung” and set the percentage under “Grundeinstellung” to “100 %”. easybank then collects the whole balance on the due date. The credit line itself stays in place.
Does switching a Barclays card to full repayment cost anything?
Changing the setting is free. For the easybank Kreditkarte, though, the price list charges a monthly fee for 100 % by automatic direct debit, while paying in full by transfer or instant debit is free. Your own price list says what applies to your card.
What interest does Barclays charge on Teilzahlung?
Your monthly statement shows your rate and the month’s interest cost. The rate is variable and follows the European Central Bank’s main refinancing rate under section 8.3 of the terms. Interest runs from the booking day of each transaction while a balance is open.
Why can there still be interest after switching to full repayment?
The waiver in section 8.2 only covers charges from the last billing month. A balance from the months on Teilzahlung carries interest until it is paid. After that, spending you pay in full by the due date each month stays interest-free.
Can I make an extra payment on a Barclays card?
Yes, at any time and in any amount, as a “Wunschbetrag” by instant debit in the app or by transfer. Under the terms a transfer during the month makes the next direct debit smaller, so it does not automatically come on top.
Can I turn the balance into fixed instalments?
Yes, with the easybank Zahlplan, as long as the account is not in default. Online banking and your statement show which transactions qualify. Special repayments on a plan are not possible, but you can dissolve it free of charge at any time.
Does this apply to Eurowings credit cards too?
Yes. easybank also issues the Eurowings cards, with a flexible credit line and the Zahlplan option. The price lists for Classic and Premium show no fee for full repayment by direct debit.
Is Barclays still the bank behind my card?
No. The bank is easybank, a brand of BAWAG Group, and your contract is with BAWAG AG Niederlassung Deutschland in Hamburg. Barclays holds no stake in the business.
